Portfolio Site.

I finally started working on the portfolio…again…and managed to get some content up and running. It may not be permanent but I wanted to have a way to share my favorite photos without using the space on here which is quickly dwindling.
Check it out here…I’ll be adding more content as time permits. Enjoy.

First Friday PLF Fun With Fire.

I finally got the chance to go through the 400+ photos from the September First Friday PLF event at Gallery5 here in Richmond, VA. I think I’ve gotten a little better with low light photography (I hope) and having the zoom lens really does help with blurriness. Maybe next time I’ll bring tripod and see what I get with a steadier base…

In the meantime here’s the fire spinners to get you through your weekend. Enjoy.

And September 22, 10:49 A.M. EDT marks the beginning of Fall…Happy Mabon to All!

First Friday PLF at Gallery5 9.7.12.

At the First Friday Art Walk this month Gallery5 hosted the Party Liberation Front, a group of performers, DJs, artists and musicians who do street performances. I’ve posted photos of the fire spinners before and have about 400 new photos from last Friday to sort through. I used the zoom lens and got some better photos. I’ll post those once I’ve gone through them.

After the PLF’s performances were over a few people who brought their own props started doing their own things. A girl has a lighted hoop and a couple of guys had lighted tether balls. Here’s some shots of those folks to check out. I hope to get the fire photos up Monday.

Have a good weekend everyone! Enjoy.

Art Walk 8.4.12.

Compared to the Art Walk last August this one was a walk in the park. It’s the last Art Walk of the summer season and there were a lot of new exhibits. Here’s some photos of what I saw that night taken with my HTC camera. 1708 Gallery had a live exhibit featuring Avery Lawrence, an artist based out of New Orleans. I saw the exhibit at the July Art Walk and liked it very much. It was cool to see him in person re-creating some of the scenes from his multi media show.

Here’s the photos. Enjoy.

Art Whino Dance Off 4.14.12

This post goes with the other G40 Mural Project post from last week.  There were 2 galleries I didn’t get to on First Friday (4.6.12) so the next weekend I drove by on my way home and saw they were open.  I stopped and happened upon live DJs and a dance off in one of the galleries.  I ended up with almost 300 photos and recorded a short video with my HTC.

Here’s a few photos and the video.  Enjoy.

G40 First Friday.

In Friday’s (4.6.12) post I mentioned the G40 Art Summit was here in Richmond, VA.  I made it down to the Art Walk and was very excited at the turn-out, lack of incidents and the art I saw.  There were more galleries open featuring the G40 artists and some of the large murals were right there on Broad Street.  There was a street performance outside of Gallery 5 and I was happy to get some photos of belly dancers and fire spinners.  I plan to visit all the murals during the day and post those photos at some point in the future.

For now here’s what was happening Friday night.  Enjoy.

Richmond Welcomes G40.

The Art Walk tonight has a little something extra…the G40 Art Summit has invited 12 mural artists from around the world to create large scale murals at 20 different locations around the city. Read more about the details here. Luckily most of the murals are around the same area as the First Friday Art Walk which will make tonight even better. I plan to revisit the murals during the day and get some photos to post.  Here’s a few from one of the first ones to go up at 11 W Grace Street by Gaia…

If anyone is here locally here’s a handy Google map of the murals.  I may see you there…

And here’s some visuals to get you started.  Enjoy.

Sometimes The Best Laid Plans…

…are rained out.  I had a plan to take some photos today but alas I couldn’t beat Mother Nature.  So for this rainy afternoon Wednesday post I decided to dig through the many many many photos I have and post some random shots.  No rhyme or reason, just ones I have that have not been posted.  I also have a plan to add a Portfolio type page of the best ones from each folder…the best one at Belle Isle…the best one at Maymont…that kind of thing.   I have a lot to go through to find ones I think are “the best”.  It may take a while.  It’ll give you something to look forward to. In the meantime here’s some shots to look at.

Enjoy.

What I Was Reading.

I have the time to read again so I finished the books I started when I started this blog.  I have about 20 or so books sitting under my coffee table waiting to be started.  I’ll update the What I’m Reading Right Now section once I decide what I’m going to read.  Here’s some thoughts on the ones I finished.

The Power of Silence – Further Lessons of Don Juan Carlos Castaneda

This another installment of Castaneda’s study of don Juan and the ways of the nagual (sorcerer).  This volume covers what seems like a wrap up of everything from the previous two.  It covers the ways to move your assemblage points, intent and stalking.  If you want to know what these mean read the book here.

What I got out of all that is pretty simple.  It’s very similar to mindfulness in Buddhism to me.  Silence helps to keep your mind focused on the now – not wandering through the past or traveling into the future.  Intent to move your assemblage point says to me that if you want something to happen focus with all of your being and it will be.  Maybe not right in that moment – patience is a virtue.  Amass your energy for what you intend, move your “assemblage point” (state of mind, perhaps) and what you want will take shape.

There are also stories of how don Juan himself was trained by his naguals.  It lends some insight into who he is and why he does what he does.  I recommend reading all of them in order…4 down and 5 to go.  There are 3 others…if I can find them all.

Writing Down The Bones – Natalie Goldberg

Whether you write fiction, non-fiction or poetry this book gives insight on how the author creates.  Her ideas and assignments are suggestions from her own workshops and experience as a writer.  It may help you grow as a writer, it may not.  I like her link of spirituality and writing.  And her ideas for keeping notebooks and rereading your work regularly.

Abnormal Psychology An Introduction – Durand & Barlow 2nd ed.

This book was given to me by a friend.  It was found in the trash and rescued.  I took Abnormal Psych in college (I may have the textbook somewhere) and have always been fascinated by it.  I hope to be able to be on “the other side of the couch” one day and help people get through mental illness.  This is a textbook.  Even so the authors manage to make it very readable and interesting with their own cases as examples.  It comes with a CD study aid which I would have used if my computer would cooperate.  As I struggle to get into some program that will allow me to be a counselor of some sort I’m sure I’ll be reading more of these kinds of books and that makes me happy.

So no photos today.  I thought I’d do something different.  It’s going to rain this weekend so I may not be able to get outside and shoot anything.

I’m going to the First Friday Art Walk tonight for my usual wanderings and hope for inspiration.  Maybe I’ll see you there.
